Why gold costs more in Pakistan
Pakistan imports almost all of its gold, and very little of it comes through official channels. The local rate is set by the sarafa association from the international price and the open-market dollar rate, plus local supply and demand. When the rupee is under pressure or demand rises before weddings and Eid, the premium usually goes up. When the international price jumps suddenly, the local rate can lag behind for a few hours, so the premium can briefly turn negative.
How we calculate it
International price per tola = gold spot price per ounce (USD) × US dollar rate (PKR) × 0.375, because one tola (11.664 g) is 0.375 troy ounce. The premium is the sarafa 24K tola rate minus this figure. We record it every time the sarafa rate changes. The dollar rate used is the interbank rate, so the premium against the open-market rate is slightly smaller.
