Live price vs official sarafa rate

The international price is set on world markets such as London and New York and moves all day. The sarafa rate in Pakistan is announced once or sometimes twice a day by the All Pakistan Sarafa Gems & Jewellers Association. It follows the international price and the dollar rate, but it also includes local factors, so it is usually a little higher or lower than the converted international price.

When you buy or sell at a jewellery shop, the shop uses the official sarafa rate, not the live international price. Use the live price to see which way the market is moving: if the international price rises sharply during the day, the next sarafa rate is likely to go up too.

How we convert the price to tola

Gold is priced internationally per troy ounce (31.1035 grams). One tola is 11.664 grams, so one tola is 0.375 ounce. We multiply the live ounce price by the US dollar rate and by 0.375 to get the international price of one tola of 24K gold in rupees.

Rates are the daily bullion rates announced by the All Pakistan Sarafa Gems & Jewellers Association, as reported by Pakistani media. Jewellers add making charges and may quote slightly different prices. Always confirm the final price with your jeweller.
